Blimey, don't know what's going on but yesterday saw me hit over 300 page views and gain over 20 new watchers all in one day?!

Not sure why but I suspect it has something to do with a recent submission of mine called 'Trauma Re-Visited'

Trauma Re-Visited by phantomphreaq

This work seems to have generated a lot of interest. Certainly my most viewed Deviation to date.

Huge thank you to all who have commented and fave'd my artworks, and a massive welcome to all you new Watchers!!

Devious Journal Entry

Yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy happy today,
A small, independant LOTR fan site shared my drawing on their Facebook page.

Kings of Middle Earth by phantomphreaq

I think they're relatively unknown to LOTR fans around the world. They're called.... what was it.... something about a ring, in a net??

Oooohhh that was it .....

theonering.net

Anyone heard of them? Thought so. :D Anyone with the slightest inkling of Tolkien fan-base know who these guys are. Even Peter Jackson himself regularly checks out their site!

So, my drawing was posted on the wall of over 51,000 facebook Ring fans :D :D

Sooooo many comments and likes it's unreal, so I am pretty proud, humbled and grateful at the moment for the amazing exposure given to my artwork. Thank you THEONERING.NET!!!

wooooooooooo!!!!

If you ask yourself why ARTISTS (tattooists, painters, singers, dancers, musicians or anyone who falls under the artist category) charge "so much" for performances... We don't get paid vacation, we don't get paid sick days, we don't get bonuses for outstanding performances nor for Christmas. We don't have insurance plans. We sacrifice our family on special days so that we can bring happiness to others. Illness or personal affairs are not excuses for a bad performance. Next time you ask, remember that ARTISTS are ARTISTS because of the love of music & art but that love doesn't pay debts. Happy Artists Day!!

First Tattoo Scariness

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 25, 2011, 1:17 PM
Well, after months of making tea, sweeping, designing, running errands and many hours of 'shoulder hanging' (this is where you hang over other artists shoulders and watch everything they're doing) I finally got to do my first in studio tattoo. YAAAY lol

It's on a friend of mine. I asked him to find a design he wanted done, or give me some ideas and i'll draw him up something relativley small and simple. He chose a pic from my gallery.
A Ringwraith horse head. . .
'Thanks, could you have found anything harder?' I asked.
'How about a nice little insecty thing, or some flaming dice or something? A single, little star??'

Nope, he was adament. So, with major fear setting in, and many a 'How the hell am I supposed to do THIS?!' gnawing away at my mind, I re-sized it, line drew it and made a stencile.
With a bit of a nervous shake I set up the station and machines, made my grey shades and went for a lovely, calming cigarette. Or two. Which had no calming effect what-so-ever.

Now with my mentor hanging over MY shoulder this time, fear was eating away at my brain and the back of my eyeballs. My foot went to the pedal and I pressed for the first time.
Nothing.
Pressed again. Nothing.
My mind went blank.
With a laugh my mentor reached over and flipped the power switch for the power pack back on. 'GOTCHA' he grinned.
We all laughed, me rather forced as i was trying to push the heart attack back at the equipment failiure. But it was a good tention breaker.

As I looked back at the stencil on my mates arm I had a moment of clarity and I thought 'I can do this. Why shouldn't I be able to do this?'
So with my liner buzzing away steadily I went to work. After about 15 minuets Alex said to me 'Good job, you know what you're doing. I'll be out front if you need me.' and he left me alone to get on with it.
I think he knew he was making me nervous by being there, and as soon as he went the fear evaporated and I just carried on, he returned periodicaly to check up on me.

After a couple of hours time was running out so I called it a day.
I'm very pleased with how it came out, and can't wait to finish it.
It needs more shading on the head to bring it out, i've also added a mane which needs to be done, and just general touch ups.

I learned to think clearly, remember what you've learnt and seen, and be smooth and steady.

A great experiance. Terrifying. But great.

Can't Think Of Anything To Write Here.

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 2, 2011, 4:43 AM
So, after years of trying, two months ago I finally managed to get an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio YAY ME! lol

Midnight Tattoo in Seaford, UK. I split my time between there and my regular job, working 6 days a week, around 60 hours a week.
Unfortunatley this means that by sunday (my only day off) i'm pretty beat and this leaves very little time for drawing.

I'll try to keep ontop of things and keep posting art.

Hope everyones well and being creative! :D

Colour Is The Game

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 4, 2010, 11:43 AM
Some of you may have noticed alot of my recent work has been VERY colourful,
This is because I have been re-drawing tattoos' by the incredible artist Mike DeVries from the US.
His tattoo's have their own unique style in the way that alot of them vere ofF in strange, melting tangents. Very Salvador Dali-like.
Indeed, DeVries has tattood a number of portraits of Dali himself.

Why DeVries' work? Simply because I need to work on my colour theory. Different tones, shades, tints. What colours play off each otherm what don't etc.
Mike Devries is all about colour and he uses it for maximum impact in his work, aswell as another amazing tattooist called Nick Baxter, who again, uses colour in such ways that it jumps off the skin in such a vivid way it literally makes you gp 'OMG!'

Careful studying other tattoo artists, their works and techniques will all go to help me eventually get that tattoo apprenticeship if been seeking for many a-year now.

If I don't update before, Happy Holidays everyone!! :holly: :xmas: :xmas: :xmas: :holly:

Swapping Pencils and Paper for a Stylus and Tablet

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 8, 2010, 2:13 PM

First of all, thanks for everyone who has fav'd or commented on my work.
It's much appreciated :D

Second, I have come to the conclusion that DA is biased in their Daily Deviation selections.
Since Monday 5th of July, 140 DD's have been selected and shown. Only TWELVE of 140 were tradtional art. The rest coming from photography and Digital Art
Personally I think thats quite shocking. As a traditional artist I think we deserve more recognition from DA.
Once again it seems technology has won over. 10 years ago there was no such thing as a digital camera, and certainly no digital art software outside a film editing studio. Now it seems that TRADITIONAL ART is being pushed aside even though it's been around for thousands of years.
For us, we put down on paper or canvas and we have to get it right first time. There is no editing of 'this line' or 'that colour'
There is no playing around with shadow and light. There is no photoshopping of back grounds, facial features and colours.
If we draw something wrong, we have to start again. We can't just draw a box around it, cut it away, edit it, and copy and paste it. If we want to draw something in a certain style or affect. We have to physically PICK UP THAT TOOL and use it to achieve what we want. Not just select a particular brush from a drop-down box.
We draw what we see. We do it right, we do it first time.

Right, now that the rant is over, i would like to mention a few people.

First up is Dina90T :icondina90t: for her kind permission in allowing me to draw her youger sister, Melina. And for being so happy with the final piece :)

Melina by phantomphreaq

Second is Dragondollz :iconitsgcbaby: for always being enthusiastic over my work, and becoming a friend

Thirdly is Rogue Pyrat :iconroguepyrat: for always pushing herself, dispite many frustrations, to become a better artist

I found a ring. I'll keep it, what harm can it do?

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 23, 2010, 6:48 AM

Hey guys,

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who has favourited or commented on my recent work.
I'm a huge Lord Of The Rings fan, and I draw alot of this not just for myself, but for all other fans out there who love these books and films.
For me, it's not really about the actual films and books, or though they are incredible :)
it's all about the DESIGN and look the artists and crafts-people at WETA workshops have bought to Tolkiens Middle-Earth.
If you own the extended versions of the films, but haven't really looked at the special features, I suggest you take a look at the WETA featurette on each film.
We're all artists in one form or another on here, and these featurettes show how truely amazing thses people are. We can learn alot from them.

However, once my current LOTR project is finished, I shall be steering away from LOTR for a short while as I NEED to concentrate on tattoo designs, I have to build my portfolio up in this area

Also, a huge thank you to dragonsdollz dragonsdollz.deviantart.com/ who always shows so much enthusiasm for my work :D :tighthug:
It's much appreciated.

Much Lovage,
Jarv x

Hey All

Just a quick note to appologise to my watchers for the influx of deviants you will be recieving in your inbox.
Most of my Deviants are poor quality, blurred, or both due to have a crappy camera.
I now have a new HD camera, so will be taking much better pics of my work and re-uploading them while deleting the old ones.

Most of them you would have seen before if you have looked through my gallery, some of them are new.

Many thanks for watching me, and favouriting various works. Always appreciated :)

Lovage to all
:relaxed:

Hey all

Just want to say a HUGE thank you to all of you that are watching my work,
and have fav'd my work also.

The newest submission 'Angel Of Grief' seems to be a particular favourite at the moment, which is a huge boost as I found drawing in ball point very difficult and challenging, but very enjoyable! The subject matter is also not something I would usually draw, but the drawing came out very well, and it seems to be a success. So i'll definatley be doing more in that 'Classical' style of drawing.

Drawing with a ball point will also improve my shading skills and line work, invaluable lessons to help my with my persuit of tattooing.

Thanks again everyone

Well, its been 5 months since i last wrote one of these.

Benn doing the odd drawings here and there, mainly concentrating on learning
how to tattoo, after spending many years designing them!
Its coming along okay. Did one on myself recently that is yet to be finished.
(see 'self tattoo' in my gallery)

I am going to spend my time learning to shade and blend while tattooing
To me this is the most crucial part of a successful tattoo.
Hope it comes along well.

HUGE thank you to all of you that have added me to your Deviant Watch.
Much respect and gratitude.

Well, dispite a busy month I have managed to add a few new deviants.
The accidental photograph that was 'Creation' has become a full blown Devient in the form of 'Genesis'.
Amazing what you can do with a mobile phone camera lol

I do hope to add more Deviants soon, though am finding it difficult to make time to do any.

The tattoo buzz has come back again so the next ones will probably be tattoo designs, especially as im looking to create my 10th one for myself.

I work almost exclusivley in the medium of pencil or pencil crayon.

Its something ive used through-out school, and the thing i felt most comfortable with while teaching myself to draw.
I haven't used a paintbrush properly for years (except highlighting certain pictures) and have no skill with charcoal, pastels etc. or have never used a computer to draw with. Wouldn't even know where to start with that lol!

I use pencil crayons because its such a humble medium to use and i like to try and produce beautiful things with them.

Unfortuantley I don't get much time to draw these days, most of my work i've uploaded is old. Sometimes as much as 10-12 years! So im sort of stuck in my skill level at the moment and am trying to push myself forward, to better my skills.
Mostley self-taught I always try to challenge myself to be better in the medium I have chosen. Hopefully the time will come when I can set myself on that road.
